SOCIOLOGY

Sociology is the study of human group behavior.  It examines virtually every aspect of social life such as organizations, social institutions, culture, deviant and criminal behavior, social stratification, race and ethnicity, gender issues, technology, collective behavior and social movements. As a social science, sociology utilizes scientific and humanistic perspectives in analyzing the social forces and processes that often impact and shape our lives.

The courses offered in the sociology discipline are designed to enable the student to afford a greater understanding of our society, its institutions, problems and solutions, and the processes of change and development.  The goals of the sociology discipline are to:

  • Provide courses with standards of content and evaluation that parallel those of four-year colleges and universities.
  • Offer a variety of instructional strategies that meet the diversity of learning found in our multicultural environment.
  • Accommodate the many diverse learning styles of our student population using flexible and comprehensive evaluation.
  • Emphasize collaborative, cooperative working styles which foster a sense of belonging in the classroom, as well as the larger college community.
  •  Offer opportunities for practical application to reinforce theoretical understanding of sociological concepts.
  •  Develop critical thinking skills for analyzing contemporary issues.
  •  Inform students and create a keen awareness of our interdependent world by offering a global perspective to the curriculum materials.
