Course Description

PSYC 2311 Human Growth and Development: Adulthood and Aging

PSYC 2311 is a study of normal physiological, emotional, and cognitive development and functioning of the human life, including young adulthood, middle adulthood, older adulthood, and dying and death processes.

This course is taught as a distance education course via video tapes.

Prerequisites

Psychology 2301 or 2308.

Course Goals (includes core competencies, incorporation of SCANS, etc.)

  1. To understand the stages of early, middle, and late adult development.
  2. To understand the physiological, intellectual, social, and emotional development within each stage.
  3. To understand the history, theory, and research in adult psychology.
  4. To understand the impact of life issues on adulthood.

This course will be taught by a qualified psychology instructor.
The course is currently taught by Dr. Genevieve D. Stevens.

Students with Disabilities

Academic Honesty

Plagiarism, cheating and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited by the HCCS policy and the rules of this class. A student found guilty of the first offense will receive a grade of (F) for that particular assignment. For the second offense, the student will receive a grade of (F) for the course.

Attendance and Withdrawal Policies

Should you find that you are not doing as well as you would like, please withdraw from the course at the nearest HCC campus by the last day for withdrawals. It is your responsibility to officially withdraw from a course. Failure to do so will result in a final grade of F.

Grading Policy

Your final course grade will be calculated according to the following formula:
        Four Exams 75%
        Written assignment (essays on exams) 25%
        Total 100%

Course Requirements for example: Testing, Projects, Assignments, Portfolios, Service Learning, Internships, etc.

  1. Exams: Your exams comprise a 75% portion of your grade. Exams will have around 50 multiple choice questions.
  2. Written Assignment: The written assignment for this course will be accomplished through essay questions that you will receive on Exams II and III. You will be given several questions, from which you will. Choose one questions to write your essay. Essays will be discussed both at Orientation and during review sessions. Your essay should be 4-5 pages long, double-spaced. You must incorporate information from the videos on your essay. Paper will be provided for you at the exam. You may not use any notes or outline information as all exams are closed book exams.

Make-up policy

If you miss one test, you must apply in writing to the Distance Education Office for a make-up. There will be Make-up dates set up by the Psychology Department at HCC Central College by our Office Assistant. Please call me at (713) 718-6860 to inform me if you need to make up an exam. Please call the office assistant at the same number to schedule such make up. Also, please review the Student Handbook for details.

If you miss two tests, you will be dropped from the course. Due to the number of opportunities available to Distance Education students to take tests, there are no exceptions to this policy.
