Student Activities
Northwest College Philosophy Club, mentored by Professor Nathan Smith, provides HCC students the opportunity to pursue interests in the art of thinking beyond the classroom; to discuss questions and articles of interest; to hear guest speakers; and to attend films and events of philosophical importance, including locally held professional meetings and conferences. Students from other HCC colleges are invited to attend the Northwest Philosophy Club's meetings, held routinely at the Spring Branch Campus Commons. Look HERE for a listing of the club's current scheduled activities. Go HERE to check out the latest entries to the Philosophy@HCC Blog.
And, if you're on Facebook, become a fan at HCC Philosophy Club !
Opportunities are also available to HCC Philosophy students wishing to either publish, or present their work to undergraduates from other colleges and universities.
These opportunities include a Philosophy Student Colloquium sponsored by The New Mexico-West Texas Philosophical Society that is included in the program of that organization's annual Spring conference. The conference is held at various locations in Texas and New Mexico. An HCC Philosophy student presented a major paper at this colloquium in March 2009, along with papers by students from other regional colleges and universities including UH-Downtown, Rice University and Texas A&M University. Student's desiring to submit their work for possible publication are encouraged to check out STANCE , an international undergraduate philosophy journal.
Additionally, the positive impact of philosophy on academic performance enhances student chances to be inducted into HCC's Omega Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international two-year college honorary.Useful Links
