MUSI 1306 – Music Appreciation
Syllabus

Course Description

* Classroom lectures and listening assignments in the basics of music history.

Course Objectives

* To examine the history of Western Music through lectures, reading, listening,
        concert attendance, and writing assignments.
* This course fulfills the following required core intellectual competencies:  reading, writing, listening, critical thinking and computer literacy.  A variety of teaching and testing methods are used to assess these competencies.

Required Text

MUSIC:  An Appreciation, 8th ed., by Roger Kamien.
* Recordings of the music studied in this class can be purchased in the HCC Bookstore for further listening outside of class.  Recordings are also available for listening in the Computer Lab, Room 102G.

Attendance and Withdrawal Policies

* According to HCCS policies, students are allowed to miss 12.5% of the hours of
instruction before the instructor may drop the student from the class.  For this
class, 2 absences are allowed – any more may result in your being dropped from
        the course.
* Attendance will be taken each class day, but will not be averaged into your grade.
* It is the responsibility of the student to officially withdraw from the course if the
student intends to receive a “W”.  Failure to withdraw may result in an “F”.
* Please make a strong effort to be on time.
* Students who repeat a course three or more times may soon face significant tuition/ fee increases at HCC and other Texas public colleges and universities.  If you are not receiving passing grades, please ask your instructor or counselor about opportunities for tutoring or other assistance prior to considering course
         withdrawal.

Concert Attendance

* Students must attend two concerts this semester, and write two reports (one for
each concert) describing the concert events.
* The reports must be typed (double-spaced), and about 2 pages in length.  Programs from the concerts must be turned in along with the reports.
* The concerts attended must be related to the course material, such as a symphony, opera, ballet, choir, jazz, musical theater, non-Western music, or a student recital.
* The 2 reports will be averaged as 1 grade, and will count as 20% of the final grade.

HCCS Policies

* Scholastic dishonesty:
        a) Cheating on a test or copying from someone else’s paper.
        b) Plagiarism:  using someone else’s words, ideas, or information without
            proper acknowledgement.
        c) Collusion:  unauthorized collaboration.
* It is against HCCS policy to bring children to class.  The Fine Arts Department
         will strictly enforce this policy.
* Guests and observers tend to be a distraction to the class.  Please obtain permission from your instructor before bringing a guest to class.
* Students who require reasonable accommodations for disabilities are encouraged to report to Dr. Becky Hauri at 713-718-7909 to make necessary arrangements.
Faculty members are authorized to make only those accommodations requested
by the Disability Support Services Office.

Grading and Policies

* Five exams will be given, each consisting of 50 multiple choice questions.  The best 4 out of 5 exams will be averaged together to make 80% of the final grade.
* Students must supply their own Scantron forms for the exams.
       (Form no. 882-ES).
* Make-up exams will not be given after the exam date.  If you know in advance that you cannot attend class on an exam date, arrange to take the exam early.
