About
The Houston Community College System
is an open admission institution that strives to bring affordable and
accessible education to the community.
We believe all students are capable of improving
their understanding and use of mathematics. To help those students
that are under prepared to take college level mathematics, the college
has a sequence of mathematics courses, called Developmental Mathematics,
that help such students prepare for the State mandated TASP examination
and college level mathematics. The main objective of these courses is
to provide access to higher level mathematics courses.
Students are placed in these courses based on their
scores on TASP or on mathematics placement examinations which are administered
by our counselors during advisement. The lecture mode format of teaching
applies to these classes. Students attend classes where ample opportunity
exists for interaction between student and instructor. Class attendance
is mandatory.
If a student does not pass the course for the first
time, he or she gets a grade of IP. This means work In Progress. However,
if the student does not pass the course the second time around, he or
she gets a letter grade of A, B, C, D, or F. Each time, the student
must sign up and pay for the course.
