GUST 0100 CAREER DEVELOPMENT Syllabus
Corequisite: Enrollment in 3 additional hours

This is a course designed to aid students in learning how to make wise career and life decisions based on self-assessment and the world of work. Students will explore options that match their unique selves and participate in goal setting based on what they have learned during the semester. Also included is the development of job-seeking skills.
GUST 0171 IMPROVING SPELLING SKILLS Syllabus
Credit: 1 (1 lecture, 1 lab)
This course utilizes a personalized system of instruction to emphasize both the whole word and the encoding process in developing the individual’s spelling abilities. The content stresses the recognition of various spellings for a given sound, an understanding of sound-spelling patterns, and the learning of exceptional patterns.
GUST 0172 IMPROVING READING RATE AND COMPREHENSION Syllabus

This course utilizes a computer lab-based, personalized system of instruction (PSI) to increase reading speed while maintaining comprehension. Emphasis is placed on overcoming subvocalization, overcoming regression, previewing, and matching reading speed to purpose. Registration for PSI sections is designed to be flexible throughout the semester for student convenience.
GUST 0173 IMPROVING VOCABULARY SKILLS Syllabus

This course utilizes a personalized system of instruction (PSI) designed to improve the individual’s knowledge and use of a variety of words. Emphasis is on structural analysis of words and word groups as well as contextual application and usage. Registration for this PSI course is designed to be flexible throughout the semester for student convenience.

A basic reading course designed to improve students’ overall reading skills. Emphasis is on reading comprehension, vocabulary development, study techniques, career planning, and critical reading. Classroom instruction is enhanced by a variety of self-paced activities.
GUST 0340 DEVELOPMENTAL READING FOR NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS OF ENGLISH Syllabus
Credit: 3 (3 lecture)
A basic reading course for non-native English speakers designed to improve students overall reading skills. Emphasis is on reading comprehension, vocabulary development, study techniques, and critical reading. Classroom instruction is enhanced by a variety of self-paced activities. Students are placed into this course on the basis of CELSA test scores.
GUST 0341 DEVELOPMENTAL READING I Syllabus

College Reading I is designed to address the developmental readers need for direct instruction in basic reading behaviors that are essential to the acquisition of knowledge in the content areas. Instruction is based on an interactive reading method with emphasis on learning to learn. These key skills include previewing chapters, selecting and organizing the information read, analyzing information, and making informed decisions about that information.
GUST 0342 DEVELOPMENTAL READING II Syllabus
Credit: 3 (3 lecture, 1 lab)
College Reading II is a continuation of reading skills introduced in GUST 0341. Stronger emphasis is on critical reading and critical thinking skills. The goal of GUST 0342 is to teach students to analyze materials thoughtfully, synthesize materials from various sources, and apply outside information to their reading.
GUST 1270 COLLEGE AND CAREER PLANNING Syllabus
Credit: 2 (3 lecture)
This course is designed to help students succeed in the college classroom. Students will learn time management and goal-setting techniques, effective listening and note-taking skills, textbook study methods, strategies for preparing for and taking examinations as well as techniques to boost concentration and memory. Other topics include: stress management, use of the college library and the Internet, research strategies, and career planning. The class also covers adapting to academic regulations and improving personal and social adjustment to college.
