The Foreign Language Program at HCCS provides language instruction in Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, and Arabic to students wishing to transfer successfully to universities, or to students that want to meet personal and professional language goals. We emphasize the acquisition of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, as well as the development of cultural sensitivity, knowledge of cultural information and understanding of cultural differences.

Performance levels or descriptions of what most students will be able to do in terms of language skills by the end of a specific course guide our courses objectives. These descriptions are based on a classification developed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Furthermore our instructors subscribe to the ACTFL Standards for Foreign Language Learning, which covers more than the separate skills previously mentioned.

The Houston Community College System is divided into five colleges.  Spanish is taught in all the colleges. French is offered in Northwest, Southwest, and Central Colleges. Russian, Japanese and German at Northwest and Central Colleges. Chinese at Central and Southwest Colleges.
