| ENGL 0320 Advanced
Grammar and TOEFL Preparation Credit 3: (3 lecture) |
| Prerequisites |
| Students generally need a score of 57 or higher to take ENGL 0320 or successful completion of ENGL 0346. |
| ENGL 0320 is designed to assist students in reaching or exceeding the TOEFL score required by the institution they want to attend. A TOEFL score of 550 is the standard minimum. The TOEFL test is a proficiency exam for non-native English speakers used mainly as an entrance exam at thousands of colleges and universities around the world. The test is composed of four sections: listening comprehension, structure and written expression, composition, and reading. ENGL 0320 helps students improve in these four areas by focusing on TOEFL practice tests and the exercises in the required textbook for the course. |

| Lab Requirements (if any) |
| Most
campuses have a designated language lab, a computer-assisted learning
center and/or an open lab in which students can access the Internet. The
ESL software Focus On Grammar is also available in most of the designated
labs. ENGL 0320 students complete a practice TOEFL online in the lab during
the semester. For ENGL 0320, students can also access practice TOEFL exercises

| Students with Disabilities |
| Any student with a documented disability (e.g. physical, learning, psychiatric, vision, hearing, etc.) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the Disabilities Services Office at the respective college at the beginning of the semester. |
| Academic Honesty |
| Houston Community College defines "scholastic dishonesty" as: cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion. Penalties for academic dishonesty at HCCS include, but are not limited to: a "0" on that test or assignment, a "W" in the course, or an "F" in the course. |
| Attendance and Withdrawal Policies |
| Students are required to attend classes regularly. However, college policy permits up to 12.5% of absence from class if necessary. In ENGL 0320, no more than 6 hours of absence are permitted. If students miss more than 6 hours, the instructor may drop them and record a W as the final grade. |

By the end of the semester, the student who passes with a final grade

| Testing |
| Students are given 3 practice TOEFL exams consisting of the four major components of a TOEFL: one diagnostic, one mid-term, and one final. Both the paper and computer-adapted testing media are used to familiarize students with these different kinds of testing situations. Classes discuss the grading system and standards used to calculate a TOEFL score. Instructors may give additional quizzes, as needed. |
