Course Description

ESOL 0350 Advanced Intermediate Reading

A continuation of ESOL 0346.  This course is designed to further develop reading comprehension skills and expand vocabulary.  This course provides practice in skills such as identifying main ideas and supporting details, determining the sequence of events, using context clues, and drawing conclusions.

Prerequisites

A satisfactory score on the CELSA or successful completion of  ESOL 0346

Course Goals (includes competencies, incorporation of SCANS, etc.)

ESOL 0350, Advanced Intermediate Reading, seeks to prepare students for college level academic or workforce study by accomplishing the following objectives:

  • to help students read more effectively in English by teaching them a variety of reading skills and strategies which may include  skimming, scanning summarizing, finding the main idea and supporting details,  discovering word meanings (general as well as specific vocabulary words) through context clues, and drawing conclusions.
  • to introduce students to a vocabulary of approximately 1,500-2,000 words, and help students increase their vocabulary through knowledge and understanding of word forms, prefixes and suffixes, and synonyms and antonyms
  • to expose students to a variety of reading sources which may include graded readers,  computer reading software, Internet sites aimed at general reading/vocabulary development, as well as extensive reading of authentic English text through periodicals and books.
  • to help students improve their critical thinking skills by analyzing various facets of their readings including understanding the author's purpose and how the  rhetorical styles are used in relation to this purpose.

Lab Requirements (if any)

One of the five instructional hours per week is a lab hour in which students work with supplementary reading materials such as the SRA series or other extensive reading projects as directed by the teacher.

Any form of copying, cheating, or plagiarism will result in a 0 for the assignment.  See the HCCS Student Handbook. 

Attendance and Withdrawal Policies
Students are not allowed more than eight absences over the semester.  Any absence beyond that may cause them to be dropped from class.  See the HCCS Student Handbook.
Course Requirements and Grading Policy

Course Outcomes

After taking ESOL 0350, Advanced Intermediate Reading, the student should:

  1. Be able to read a variety of texts of lengths ranging from 500-1500 words, on subjects of general academic interest;
  2. Be able to read a short work of fiction or non-fiction outside of class and report on it to the class;
  3. Continue to improve reading rate;
  4. Continue to develop basic reading skills:  previewing, skimming, scanning, summarizing, determining meaning from context, drawing conclusions
  5. Show familiarity with different rhetorical modes (e.g. process description, comparison/contrast, definition, cause/effect) and how they are realized in a text;

Note:  There is no final exam for this course.
Testing
Chapter/unit tests will be given upon completion of each chapter/unit.
Make-up policy

If students miss a test or a quiz, they must arrange with the instructor for a make-up outside of class time and before the end of one week from the day they missed.

Projects, Assignments, Portfolios, Service Learning, Internships, etc.
An instructor may choose to include projects or assignments to reinforce  the material covered in class.
