Course Description

ESOL. 0349, ADVANCED INTERMEDIATE CONVERSATION

"A continuation of ESOL 0345.  This course is designed to further develop conversational
skills by incorporating more complicated vocabulary and grammatical structures. 
Students are also required to present oral reports at various times during the semester."

Prerequisites

A satisfactory score on the CELSA or successful completion of  ESOL 0345

Course Goals (includes competencies, incorporation of SCANS, etc.)

ESOL 0349, Advanced Intermediate Conversation, seeks to prepare students for college
or workforce classes and speaking assignments in general by accomplishing the
following objectives

·    Developing students' conversational skills through the use of vocabulary and
     grammatical structures used in academic and workforce situations..
·    Introducing students to academic and workforce situations through the use of in-class presentations,
     role plays, panel and group discussions.

·    Developing students' listening comprehension and note taking skills through exposure to recorded
     and teacher-generated listening comprehension material.

·    Giving students a greater awareness of English pronunciation as well as common stress and
     intonation patterns through exposure to songs, jazz chants, and tapes.

Lab Requirements (if any)

One of the five instructional hours per week is an audio lab hour in which students listen to recorded lectures to improve note-taking skills, or work on pronunciation practices as directed by the instructor.

Students with Disabilities

Students who require reasonable accommodations for disabilities are encouraged to report to Disability Counselor to make necessary arrangements.  Faculty are only authorized to provide accommodations requested by the Disability Support Services Office.

Academic Honesty

Any form of copying, cheating, or plagiarism will result in a 0 for the assignment.  See the HCCS Student Handbook.

Attendance and Withdrawal Policies
Students are not allowed more than eight absences over the semester.  Any absence beyond that may cause them to be dropped from class.  See the HCCS Student Handbook.
Course Requirements and Grading Policy
Course Outcomes

After taking ESOL 0349, Advanced Intermediate Conversation, the student should:

1.     Be able to get the gist, supporting ideas, and some inferences from conversations and talks
       dealing with workforce and academic topics.

2.    Exhibit familiarity with common academic and workforce vocabulary.

3.    Exhibit familiarity with English pronunciation and most stress and intonation patterns.

4.    Be able to present individual, pair, group, and panel presentations on researched topics.

5.    Be able to be generally understood by someone who has some contact with non-native speakers
       of English.

6.    Be able to take notes on short workforce and academic topics.

*Teachers may use percentages which vary from the above formula; however, if the percentages deviate by more than 5% for any item, the teacher should show them to the Department Chair or Lead Instructor for approval.  Keep in mind that the overall core of the student’s grade should be based on presentations.
Testing

Students in ESOL 0349 will have at least 4 graded speaking assignments in class:

  • 4 presentations (must include one of each of the following: individual, pair, group, and panel)
  • 5-8 note taking quizzes
  • a final examination

Make-up policy
If students miss a test or a quiz, they must arrange with the instructor for a make-up outside of class time and before the end of one week from the day they missed.
Projects, Assignments, Portfolios, Service Learning, Internships, etc.
An instructor may choose to include projects or assignments to reinforce  the material covered in class.
Course Content
Students are given topics to work on individually, in pairs, or in small groups for in-class presentations. Students learn note-taking skills on a variety of topics in the audio lab as outlined in the sample course calendar below.
