Course Description

ESOL. 0345, INTERMEDIATE CONVERSATION

A continuation of ESOL 0341.  This course places emphasis on idiomatic speech, everyday vocabulary development, and listening comprehension.

Prerequisites

A satisfactory score on the CELSA or successful completion of  ESOL 0341

Course Goals (includes competencies, incorporation of SCANS, etc.)
ESOL 0345, Intermediate Conversation, seeks to prepare students for college level academic or workforce study by advancing them from high beginning to high intermediate level in the following English language skills:

•    listening comprehension
•    oral fluency
•    active vocabulary
•    pronunciation

Lab Requirements (if any)

One of the five instructional hours per week is an audio lab hour in which students listen to recorded lectures to improve note-taking skills, or work on pronunciation practices as directed by the instructor.

Students with Disabilities

Any form of copying, cheating, or plagiarism will result in a 0 for the assignment.  See the HCCS Student Handbook. 

Attendance and Withdrawal Policies
Students are not allowed more than eight absences over the semester.  Any absence beyond that may cause them to be dropped from class.  See the HCCS Student Handbook.
Course Requirements and Grading Policy
Course Outcomes

After taking ESOL 0345, Intermediate Conversation, the student should be able to perform the following language functions at a high intermediate level:

1.    Listening Comprehension
     - Predict the direction a speaker's discourse will take
     - Identify speaker's main idea and details
     - Guess meaning from context
     - Summarize the discourse
     - Make inferences
     - Take notes on a lecture

2.    Fluency
     - Express ideas and emotions on a given topic
     - Ask for clarification from others
     - Compare opinions and discuss differences

3.    Vocabulary
     - Understand and use new vocabulary relevant to given topics
     - Understand and use idiomatic expressions presented in discourse
     - Expand understanding of the meaning, usage, and word forms of vocabulary items in
        different contexts

4.    Pronunciation
     - Understand and use appropriate word and sentence stress
     - Understand and use statement and question intonation
     - Understand and use correct pronunciation or plural s forms
     - Understand and use common reductions and contractions
     - Understand and use pauses between thought groups
     - Understand and use contrastive stress for new or contradictory information

Testing
Students who successfully complete ESOL 0345 will  have performed the following tasks at an appropriate skill level: 

•    Before listening to a recorded passage on a topic, demonstrate understanding of vocabulary and language to be used in the passage.
•    After listening to a recorded passage, demonstrate skills of (a) prediction, (b) comprehension of main ideas, (c) comprehension of details, and (d) inference.
•    Discuss everyday topics using grammar, pronunciation, and idiomatic expressions appropriate for the intermediate level.
•    Make oral presentations including role plays, surveys, speeches, and experiments.
Make-up policy
If students miss a test or a quiz, they must arrange with the instructor for a make-up outside of class time and before the end of one week from the day they missed.
Projects, Assignments, Portfolios, Service Learning, Internships, etc.
An instructor may choose to include projects or assignments to reinforce  the material covered in class.
Course Content
Students are given topics to work on individually, or role play in pairs, or in small groups.  Some of these may include surveys, speeches, or experiments that require individual or group preparation for in-class presentations.
