| Course Outcomes After taking ESOL 0341, Beginning Conversation, the student should 1. Be able to conduct simple conversations in familiar day-to-day situations 2. Be able to get the gist of short conversations or talks that use familiar vocabulary and grammatical structures 3. Exhibit familiarity with common day-to-day vocabulary. 4. Exhibit familiarity with basic English pronunciation and stress and intonation patterns 5. Be able to present a short presentation on a familiar topic using familiar vocabulary and grammatical structures 6. Be able to be generally understood by someone used to dealing with non-native speakers of English SUGGESTED GRADE PERCENTAGES*
*Teachers may use percentages which vary from the above formula; however, if the percentages deviate by more than 5% for any item, the teacher should show them to the Department Chair or Lead Instructor for approval. Keep in mind that the overall core of the student’s grade should be based on presentations. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Testing | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Students in ESOL 0341 will
have at least 3 graded speaking assignments in class: • 1 individual presentation • 1 paired presentation • a final exam It is strongly recommended that students be made to create visual aids for use with their presentations. In addition, students should be given time to research their topics on the internet or in the library. Students should also be given a time frame in which to speak (2-5 minutes, for example). They should be encouraged to speak for longer lengths of time as the semester progresses. Finally, the students should be informed about how their presentations will be graded. Teachers should not expect students at this level to speak in grammatically perfect sentences or to have perfect pronunciation, although they should expect the students to be comprehensible to someone who has some dealings with non-native speakers of English. In addition, teachers should expect students to have control over basic grammatical patterns. Students in ESOL 0341 will have at least 5 Vocabulary/Listening quizzes at the end of individual units. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Make-up policy | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| If students miss a test or a

time and before the end of one week from the day they missed. |

| Projects, Assignments, Portfolios, Service Learning, Internships, etc. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| An instructor may choose to include projects or assignments to reinforce the material covered in class. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Students are given topics to work on individually, or role play in pairs, or in small groups. Some of these may include surveys, speeches, or experiments that require individual or group preparation for in-class presentations. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
