Career Opportunities
The Intensive English Program of the Houston Community College System offers non-native speakers an intensive program (20 hours a week) in English instruction to prepare for work on a college degree, or for greater opportunities in personal, career, and community activities.
When students complete the Intensive English Program,
we hope they will continue on as students at Houston Community College.
Upon completion of the program students have the option to take courses
towards and academic degree or take courses towards a certificate. Students
pursuing an academic degree and some certificates will be required to
take TASP. Depending on their TASP score they may be required to take
some developmental reading classes and some developmental writing classes.
Students who choose to pursue a certificate must take the TABE. In most
cases, they can immediately begin taking certificate classes, but counselors
may recommend that they take some developmental courses.
If a student completes an associate degree at Houston Community College, the student can transfer to the UH main campus and begin taking classes towards a bachelor degree without having to take TOEFL.
