SPEECH COMMUNICATION

 

SPCH 1311 -  FUNDAMENTALS OF SPEECH COMMUNICATION

Syllabus CREDIT: 3 (3 Lecture)

Prerequisite: Must be placed into college-level reading (or enroll in

GUST 0342 as a co-requisite) and be placed into college-level writing

(or enroll in ENGL 0310/0349 as a co-requisite).

A survey course in the basic principles of oral communication. Includes the study of the use of the body and voice, the speaker-listener relationship, and preparation and delivery of platform speeches. Open to all students. Required for speech majors. Core Curriculum Course.

 

 

SPCH 1315 - PUBLIC SPEAKING

Syllabus CREDIT: 3 (3 Lecture)

Prerequisite: SPCH 1311 or ENGL 1301 or department approval.

Designed to develop proficiency in public speaking situations; emphasis on content, organization, and delivery of speeches for various occasions. Open to all students. Required for speech majors. Core Curriculum Course.

 

 

SPCH 1318 - INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

Syllabus CREDIT: 3 (3 Lecture)

Prerequisite: Must be placed into college-level reading (or enroll in

GUST 0342 as a co-requisite) and be placed into college-level writing

(or enroll in ENGL 0310/0349 as a co-requisite).

A course designed to improve the student's effectiveness in small-group and one-to-one communication. Open to all students. Required for speech majors. Core Curriculum Course.

 

 

SPEECH 1321 - BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL SPEAKING

Syllabus CREDIT: 3 (3 Lecture)

Prerequisite: Must be placed into college-level reading (or enroll in

GUST 0342 as a co-requisite) and be placed into college-level writing

(or enroll in ENGL 0310/0349 as a co-requisite).

Applies the techniques of oral, verbal and nonverbal communication to situations most common to business and professional people.  Covers discussion methods, conference techniques, committee reports, instructions, and lectures and professional presentations.  Core Curriculum Course.

 

 

 

SPEECH 1342 - VOICE & DICTION

Syllabus

Prerequisite: Must be placed into college-level reading (or enroll in

GUST 0342 as a co-requisite) and be placed into college-level writing

(or enroll in ENGL 0310/0349 as a co-requisite).

Training in the effective use of vocal skills. Includes the study of voice mechanism and the phonetic alphabets; improvement of articulation, enunication, and pronunciation skills. Highly recommended for non-native speakers. Native speakers are encouraged to enroll. Required for speech majors.  Core Curriculum Course.

 

 

 

 

SPEECH 2333 - DISCUSSION AND SMALL GROUP COMMUNICATION

CREDIT: 3 (3 Lecture)

Prerequisite: Must be placed into college-level reading (or enroll in

GUST 0342 as a co-requisite) and be placed into college-level writing

(or enroll in ENGL 0310/0349 as a co-requisite).

Examines the dynamics of small group communication and discussion situations, including body language. Open to all students.  Required for speech majors.

 

 

SPEECH 2335 DEBATE

CREDIT: 3 (3 Lecture)

Study of principles of argumentation and debate. Practice in preparing written and spoken arguments. Open to all students.

 

 

SPEECH 2341 INTERPRETIVE READING

CREDIT: 3 (3 Lecture)

Cultivation of the art of oral presentation of literary forms, analysis of thought, development of imagination, communication of emotional values, and individual projects in interpretive reading. Open to all students. Required for speech majors.
