JOURNALISM AND SPEECH MISSIONS
INTRODUCTION
Communication is an invaluable tool that requires cooperation from all people in order to be its best. In addition, it requires practice in order to reveal its true power. It intends to connect people in some way, and it demands attention, provokes thought, and influences behavior. Generally, some individuals appreciate others agreeing with them, however, it is important to note that proper communication facilitates understanding. If there is no understanding, there cannot be intelligent consent, nor dissent.
Journalism
The purpose of the Journalism Department is to assist students in becoming critical users and skillful practitioners in the mass media, collectively and individually, as represented by the study of human communication processes using the principles, practices and technology of print journalism, radio and television broadcasting, film and video production, the use of cable systems, satellites and the internet. Instructors strive to enable students with an interest in these areas to reach their full potential intellectually, professionally and technically.
When we think of the evolution of mass media, we usually start with Gutenberg and the printing press. And when we use the word "press," we usually think of the "power of the pen" or the written word to inform, to educate, to question, to enlighten, to uplift and to tear down. As hundreds of years have passed, that one medium -- the press -- has evolved into a full spectrum of mechanical communication devices through which the world's citizens have been brought closer together. As the new millennium opens before us, the task now, as it has been in the past, is to use these tools wisely and expertly in a democratic society for the betterment of mankind. And so, journalism faculty consider it a high calling to prepare students to be thoughtful, curious, critical, creative and skillful practitioners in whatever field of communication they choose.
Speech Communication
Speech Communication involves interactions, or message transmissons using verbal language, in addition to oral and nonverbal language. Contrary to some beliefs, talking is not limited to what is spoken through the lips, rather it includes the strength of the silent voice. This area of the discipline also pertains to interpersonal communication, small group, family communication, voice and diction, organizational development, and more. Further, it is a critical component in the resolution of problems.
Instructors in the Department of Speech Communication at Houston Community College aspire to educate individuals about this tractional phenomenon, as well as provide opportunity to put it to use, effectively. In short, we intend to work independently and in concert to help you understand and be understood. We aim to assist you to obtain the results that you seek, using the appropriate communication skills. To this end, our mission is simple: to help you become the best human being possible through the proper use of communication skills.
