Course Description

HALT 1322 - LANDSCAPE DESIGN

A study of the principles and elements of landscape design. Topics include client interview, site analysis, plan view, scale, plant selection, basic drawing and drafting skills, and plan preparation.

Prerequisites

None

Course Goals (includes competencies, incorporation of SCANS, etc.)

The student will demonstrate the appropriate procedures utilized in the development of a landscape plan; create an acceptable landscape design; and perform a site analysis and successfully incorporate the information into the final design.

The student will be required to turn in a computer generated research paper and will also be required to give an oral presentation.

Academic Honesty

Academic dishonesty, CHEATING, will not be tolerated. If an individual is caught, punishment will be taken according to the Student Policies Handbook.

Attendance and Withdrawal Policies

Students are expected to attend classes regularly. Class attendance is checked daily by instructors. Although it is the responsibility of the student to drop a course for non-attendance, the instructor has the authority to drop a student for excessive absences. A student may be dropped from a course for excessive absences after the student has accumulated absences in excess of 12.5% of the hours of instruction (including lecture and laboratory time).

Course Requirements and Grading Policy

The students will be required to complete various projects. These will be determined and assigned by instructor.

Testing

The tests in this class are class projects. There are no written tests.

Course Content

Relationships between landscape designers and other design professionals and disciplines in the landscape industry.
Drawing Exercise I - Practice types of line work to learn proper use of equipment for drafting and drawing. Practice architectural lettering style.
Drawing Exercise II - Introduction to design graphics, vocabulary line signatures, and plan graphics. Practice drawing elements used in landscape plans.
Lecture on environmental factors, security, visual resource management, and other factors influencing landscape planning and design.
Incorporation of environmental factors into the design process.

Design theory, role of programming, relationships of design elements, examples of designs from historic landscapes, including local examples.
Begin design project, a courtyard design plan for the campus.
On-site inventory/anaylsis and documentation.
Studio and lecture regarding, program elements, schematic design process, sheet layout and design, title block information, design theory,and the production process.
Plan production and rendering techniques.
Student performance evaluation/critique.

Design theory, the design process revisited and clarified. Creation of program elements for second project with studio, landscape planning video, and lectures.
Discussions of environmental factors, security, visual resource management, and other factors which will affect landscape planning video, and lectures.
Studio classes for duration of the semester. Development and completion of the schematic design plan for the HCC campus landscape improvements.

Presentation of student landscape plans to HCC Program Director.
Exit interviews.
