| Course Description |
| HALT 1211 - SHRUBS, VINES AND GROUNDCOVERS In-depth coverage of the shrubs, vines, and ground covers used in the horticulture industry. Topics include identification, characteristics, adaptation, cultural requirements, pest and disease problems, and use in the landscape. |

| Course Goals (includes competencies, incorporation of SCANS, etc.) |
| The student will identify shrubs, vines, and ground covers in various growth stages; describe morphological, anatomical, or other botanical features; and explain the cultural requirements of shrubs, vines and ground covers. The student will be required to turn in a computer generated research paper and will also be required to give an oral presentation. |

| Academic dishonesty, CHEATING, will not be tolerated. If an individual is caught, punishment will be taken according to the Student Policies Handbook. |
| Attendance and Withdrawal Policies |
| Students are expected to attend classes regularly. Class attendance is checked daily by instructors. Although it is the responsibility of the student to drop a course for non-attendance, the instructor has the authority to drop a student for excessive absences. A student may be dropped from a course for excessive absences after the student has accumulated absences in excess of 12.5% of the hours of instruction (including lecture and laboratory time). |
| Course Requirements and Grading Policy |
| Every Saturday quizzes will begin at the start of the class on plants previously studied. Each quiz will be worth 100 points. Students will be required to identify 10 plants. Each is worth 10 points (3 points for the common name, 4 points for the genus, and 3 points for the species). Each plant name must be spelled correctly. Students are required to review plant identification inventory cards. |

| The tests in this class are written. They include being able to spell the common name, genus, and species of plants correctly. |
